Design Wise: What's New in Home Building
The mere fact that you’re interested in building a home says that you have a creative side. Between visiting models, browsing through magazines and catalogs – even borrowing ideas from friends, you’ve already got some good ideas for your new home.
But just in case you’re interested in what everyone else is doing, here are a few trends we’re seeing in the building industry today.
The Majority is Downsizing.
According to Nation’s Building News, 75% of all households do not have children under the age of 18. With less demand for more space, many buyers of smaller homes want downsized versions of larger home plans.
Bonus Rooms are Welcome Additions.
Flex spaces or bonus rooms are being added off the kitchen, master bedroom or over the garage for a computer room, home office, studio or quiet space.
Bring the Outside In.
Wallpaper and faux painting are out and paint colors that mimic nature are in. Just check out paint color names. They’ll tell you what’s in style.
Color, Color Everywhere.
Add character with color – on walls, woodwork, trim, accents, furniture and cabinetry.
High Tech is High on the List.
Most homes are being wired for family offices, communication technology and home entertainment. Families are spending more time together at home than ever before.
Enjoyable Retreats.
Game rooms of old are now children’s retreats, which consist of a common area for studying and play surrounded by bedrooms – away from the parents who can enjoy a movie or curl up with a book in front of the fireplace.
Stainless Still Shines.
When it comes to kitchen appliances, the professional look of high-polished stainless steel is seen on design floors everywhere.
Clean, Clear Water.
Pure drinking water is high on the list of “must-haves” for homeowners. Whether it’s a water filtration system or freestanding water cooler, consumers are thirsty for the beverage that’s best for them.
Leaning Toward Lofts.
No matter if it’s a converted warehouse or built from scratch, loft living is all the rage for the very young and the young at heart.
